In order to become a Registered Sanitarian or Sanitarian Intern in the State of North Carolina, an individual must first make application to the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners (Board) as a Sanitarian Intern. To qualify for consideration, an individual must have a 4-year bachelor’s degree and completed at least 30 college semester hours in the physical or biological sciences. The application process requires the following submissions to the Board:

  1. A completed Intern Application (Adobe .pdf) with a check in the amount of $35.00 payable to the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners.  The applications must have the signature and seal of a Notary Public.
  2. A copy of the current Job Description for the applicant signed by the applicant's supervisor.  The job must be one which is related to the field of environmental health.
  3. A completed Supervisory Statement (Adobe .pdf) signed by the applicant's supervisor.
  4. A certified transcript of all degrees and educational courses completed and grades received. The 30 semester hours of science requirement will be notated here.  The transcript must be sent to the Board Office directly from the educational institution.
  5. A completed Employer Verification Form (Adobe .pdf)

The Board will review the application, including the job description and the transcript, at its next official meeting. When the Board has approved the application, the individual will be notified as soon as possible. If approved, the individual is immediately registered as a Sanitarian Intern and must complete all requirements for full registration as a Registered Sanitarian within the time limits set by Article 4 of Chapter 90A.

All forms, fees, and documents should be mailed to the board secretary.
